I found out my son had sickle cell disease when he was 5 weeks old and I was terrified, very scared, confused and had no idea how or what to do. I cried many nights thinking how and what life would be like. I had all these emotions weighing down on me because growing up as a child, the only thing I ever known about sickle cell disease was what I saw with my own eyes. Seeing friends hospitalized all the time, seeing them in pain on a regular basis and sickle cell has claimed many lives of millions of people. I looked into my newborn eyes who has sickle cell and this is all I could think.
2. How old is your son? Aiden is 5 years old
3. What is your message for parents that have a child or children with sickle cell?
My message to all parents is simply educating ourselves. Sickle cell disease is a very painful disease but we must realize that there are things we can do to alleviate the symptoms; like eating the right foods and taking the necessary herbs that helps the body produce red blood cells and increases oxygen. Herbs has been on this earth since the beginning of time and they are so good for so many things, we just need to open our minds up and understand the power of herbs.
4. What is your take on people who think it is not important to get pre tested for sickle cell?
I think it's a poor decision not to get pre tested. It's very important to know if you are a carrier of sickle cell disease because first of all for your own health with just having the trait can cause health issues in itself and also if you marry someone who's a carrier it's important to be prepared of knowing the outcome of bringing a child into the world with this disease. And to be prepared for everything that comes along with caring for a child with sickle cell. I didn't find out I had the trait until I was 19 years old. I have the trait and nearly died after delivering my 3rd child. I've grown up all my life thinking people with the trait cannot have any issues with sickle cell and I was sadly mistaken. I have had pain crisis before and it is so important to know how to take care of yourself.
5. What was the first step you made to transition your son to natural treatment?
After my son spent every 3 months in the hospital and after receiving 2 blood transfusions that same year, I knew I had to do change something. I searched the web daily, did tons of research and the first 2 herbs I discovered through doing research was Ginkgo Biloba and liquid Chlorophyll. The beautiful thing about herbs are they are good for so many things, the main thing in Ginkgo Biloba I found to help my son is it's great for blood circulation and also increases cerebral circulation which can help with protecting the retina from damage. Liquid chlorophyll is found in all our leafy green vegetables and helps builds red blood cells, increases oxygen and raises hemoglobin. These are the first 2 herbs I started my son on and this was the beginning of a beautiful journey for my family.
6. Where did you find your knowledge in natural healing for sickle cell?
I found my knowledge in the beginning from doing tons of research on the internet, I spent endless days and countless nights searching for answers. I also had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Charlie Ware, a homeopathic doctor in Florida who treats sickle cell patients with herbs and having great success. I've learned a wealth of information from him.
7. What inspired you to write this book?
What inspired me to write my book is after seeing my son not have a crisis in 3 years, I knew this was something I needed to tell the world. There are millions suffering and dying daily and this information need to be made available for people. People need to know and understand there are other alternatives we can do to live normal lives. My son is now 5 years old and has made it 4 years without 1 crisis and I hope to be an inspiration to others. We must stand up, educate ourselves and understand that Knowledge is Power, but only if we apply it.
8. Why is it important for everyone with sickle cell to have this book?
I think it's important for everyone to have my book because it's an inspiring story about my son once having crisis very often to not having a crisis in 4 years. Dr. Ware contributed a wealth of information to my book as well; information that is very important to people who are suffering with sickle cell disease. He talks about sickle cell in depth and also several different herbs we can take to minimize crisis and have normal healthy lives living with this disease. Let's not settle and accept this disease, we have to make the decision not to let it take over our bodies. Once we understand the steps to take and apply them we will start to see less and less hospital rooms and we will start living for a better and healthier tomorrow.
